Why You’ll Love This Pink Hot Cocoa

  • It’s a simple recipe. No cocoa powder, no fancy tools. Just milk, white chocolate chips and a little color.
  • It’s ready in minutes. You can have two mugs ready in about 15 minutes.
  • It’s rich without added sugar. The white chocolate brings all the sweetness you need.
  • It’s a fun drink for kids and grown-ups. That bright pink hue gets everyone excited.
  • It’s easy to customize. Try different flavors, toppings or a dairy-free option (more on that below).

Ingredients You’ll Need

You only need a handful of simple ingredients. Exact amounts are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Milk: Whole milk gives you the creamiest drink. 2% works too, it’s just a little lighter.
  • White chocolate chips: These melt right into the milk and do all the sweetening. Choose a brand that lists cocoa butter in the ingredients for the smoothest texture.
  • Pink food coloring: A few drops is all it takes. Red works too; use less of it for a soft pink.
  • Whipped cream: Store-bought or homemade, whatever you have on hand.
  • Pink sprinkles: For a festive finish on top.

Optional toppings: mini marshmallows, white chocolate shavings or a drizzle of melted pink candy melts.

How to Make Pink Hot Chocolate

Warm the milk gently. Pour the milk into a small saucepan and set it over low-medium heat. You want it steaming with tiny bubbles around the edge, not boiling. Boiled milk can scorch on the bottom and form a skin on top.

Melt in the white chocolate. Turn the burner down to low heat before you add the chips. White chocolate is more delicate than dark chocolate and can turn grainy if it gets too hot. Stir slowly and keep going until every chip has melted and the milk looks silky.

Add the pink coloring. Start with just a couple of drops and stir. Check the color, then add more a drop at a time until you get the pink you like. It’s much easier to deepen the color than to lighten it.

Heat it through. Let it warm for a couple more minutes, stirring now and then. Once it’s hot all the way through, take it off the stove.

Pour and top. Divide it between two mugs. Add a big swirl of whipped cream and a shower of pink sprinkles, then serve while it’s hot.

Tips and Variations

  • Keep the heat low. This is the biggest tip for smooth white hot chocolate. If the chips seize up, whisk in a splash of cold milk off the heat.
  • Go natural with the color. Skip the food coloring and stir in a teaspoon of beet juice. It gives a lovely pink hue, and a small amount won’t change the flavor.
  • Add strawberry flavor. Whisk in a tablespoon of crushed freeze-dried strawberries for a strawberries-and-cream version. It turns the drink pink on its own, too.
  • Try different flavors. A drop of peppermint extract, a splash of vanilla or a spoonful of raspberry syrup all work well.
  • Make a dairy-free option. Use oat milk and dairy-free white chocolate chips. Oat milk is naturally creamy, so it’s my favorite swap.
  • Add a contrast topping. A drizzle of melted dark chocolate over the whipped cream looks pretty and balances the sweetness.

Serving Ideas for Parties and Special Occasions

This delicious treat is made for celebrating. Here are a few ways to serve it:

Cozy evenings: Make a pot after dinner and curl up with a movie.

Valentine’s Day: Top with heart sprinkles and serve with chocolate-dipped strawberries.

Birthday party: Set up a hot chocolate bar with mini marshmallows, sprinkles and whipped cream so kids can build their own.

Baby shower: Serve it in clear mugs or glass cups with a striped straw. It’s perfect for a pink-themed shower.

Making It for a Crowd in a Slow Cooker

Feeding a group? Scale the recipe up and let your slow cooker do the work. Add 8 cups of milk and about 2 ⅔ cups of white chocolate chips, then cook on low for 1½ to 2 hours. Stir every 30 minutes, then add the pink coloring once the chips have melted. Switch to the warm setting and let guests serve themselves.

Pink Hot Cocoa Mix in a Mason Jar

A jar of homemade hot cocoa mix makes a sweet party favor or gift. In a pint mason jar, layer about 1 cup of whole milk powder, 1 cup of white chocolate powder and ½ cup of white chocolate chips. Top with pink sprinkles and mini marshmallows.

Add a tag that says: Stir ⅓ cup of mix into 1 cup of hot water or milk until melted. The pink sprinkles melt into the mix and tint it a soft pink. Add a little freeze-dried strawberry powder for a deeper color.

Pink Hot Chocolate FAQs

What’s the difference between pink hot chocolate and white hot chocolate?

They’re almost the same drink. Pink hot chocolate is white hot chocolate with a little coloring added for that fun pink hue.

Can I make it ahead of time?

Yes. Let it cool, then store it covered in the fridge for up to 2 days. Rewarm it in a medium saucepan over low heat, stirring often.

Can I use a different kind of milk?

Any milk works. Whole milk is the creamiest, and oat milk is the best dairy-free choice.

Why did my white chocolate get clumpy?

The heat was probably too high. Take the pan off the burner and whisk hard, adding a splash of cold milk if needed.

Can I use red food coloring instead of pink?

Yes. Use just 1 or 2 drops so it stays pink instead of turning red.
