Christmas Tree Cheese Board (Easy Christmas Tree Charcuterie Board)
Published on October 21, 2026
This Christmas tree cheese board takes about 20 minutes and you probably have most of it in your fridge already. I cube up a couple blocks of cheese, add cherry tomatoes and a few veggies, and lay a sprig of rosemary across the middle like garland. It’s the easiest Christmas appetizer I make, and somehow it’s always the first thing gone.

I usually set this out with a Christmas tree pull apart bread or the cranberry brie pull apart bread so there’s something warm on the table too. For the kids, Grinch fruit kabobs are just as fast, and cranberry mimosas are my go-to drink for the adults. If you need more ideas for the menu, I have a big list of Christmas party food ideas too.

What You Need for This Easy Christmas Charcuterie Tree
Colby Jack Cheese: Its marbled look adds a nice contrast against the other cubes once it’s cut small.
Gouda Cheese: Mild and a little creamy, it forms the top point of your tree.
Cherry Tomatoes: Pick ones that are firm and roughly the same size so your rows stay even.
Cucumber Slices or Green Grapes: Either one adds a pop of extra green between the cheese rows, totally optional but pretty.
Cheddar Slice or Yellow Bell Pepper: This becomes your tree topper star, so pick whichever is easier to cut cleanly.
Pretzel Rods or Crackers: These form the trunk at the base, so grab sturdy ones that won’t snap when you place them.
Fresh Rosemary Sprigs: Tuck these in for greenery, they’re more for looks than eating.
Crackers for Serving: Any sturdy variety works, just make sure there’s plenty since this board disappears fast.
Folded Salami or Pepperoni (optional): A great way to turn this into more of a full meat and cheese spread.
Green or Black Olives (optional): These add little pops of color tucked between rows.
Mini Mozzarella Balls (optional): Good for filling small gaps and adding texture.
Pomegranate Seeds (optional): A handful scattered on top gives the whole board a festive, jewel-toned finish.

How to Build a Holiday Cheese Board
Step 1: Cut the Colby Jack and cheddar into small, even cubes so your rows stack up neatly later. Rinse and dry your cherry tomatoes, and if you’re using cucumber, slice it into thin rounds now.
Step 2: Use a small star-shaped cookie cutter on your cheddar slice or yellow bell pepper to make the topper (not shown, but makes a super cute addition). Set it to the side where it won’t get buried.

Step 3: Grab a charcuterie board and start at the top. Lay a small, narrow row of cheddar cubes to form the point of the tree.
Step 4: Just below that, add a slightly wider row of cherry tomatoes, then a wider row of Colby Jack beneath that. Slide a few rosemary sprigs underneath the Colby Jack row so the greenery peeks out.
Step 5: Keep repeating that same pattern, cheddar, tomatoes, Colby Jack, rosemary, making each new row a bit wider than the last so the whole thing fans out into a triangle. This is where you can tuck in cucumber, grapes, olives, or any of the optional add-ins to fill gaps.

Step 6: Once your tree shape reaches the width you want, lay the pretzel rods or crackers across the bottom center to act as the trunk, and set your star cutout at the very top point.
Step 7: Fill in any empty spots on the board with extra crackers for serving, and it’s ready for the table.

Tips for the Best Make Ahead Christmas Cheese Board
Make Ahead:
- You can fully assemble this board up to 3 hours before your party and keep it covered tightly with plastic wrap in the fridge.
- Hold off on adding the rosemary and star topper until right before serving so they stay fresh and vibrant.
Storage:
- Leftover cheese cubes and veggies keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days.
- The crackers are best kept separate so they don’t go soft from sitting near the cheese or tomatoes.
Platter Notes:
- You don’t need a special tree-shaped platter, any large board or tray works as long as you arrange everything in a triangle.
- A cutting board lined with parchment also works in a pinch if you don’t own a serving platter big enough.

Easy Swaps for This Holiday Charcuterie Tree
Cheese Options: Any firm cheese that cubes well can stand in for the Colby Jack or cheddar if that’s what you have on hand.
- Pepper jack adds a little kick if your crowd likes spice.
- Monterey Jack works great as a budget-friendly swap.
Make It a Charcuterie Board: Folded salami or pepperoni slices tucked between the cheese rows turn this into a heartier meat and cheese spread.
- Prosciutto ribbons also look beautiful woven between the Gouda rows.
Veggie Swaps: Cucumber and grapes are both optional, so use whichever gives you the pop of green you’re after.
- Sliced celery can work in a pinch if you’re out of both.
- Pomegranate seeds scattered throughout add a festive red accent.
Star Topper Swap: A yellow bell pepper star is a nice fresh alternative if you’d rather skip another slice of cheese.
- A small star cut from a slice of provolone also works nicely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you can assemble the whole thing up to 3 hours ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. Just wait to add the rosemary and star topper until right before you serve it so everything looks fresh.
Not at all. Any large rectangular board or platter works fine, you’re just arranging the ingredients into a triangle shape as you go.
Definitely. Add folded salami or pepperoni between the cheese rows for a heartier meat and cheese version, similar to our easy charcuterie grazing board.
Technically yes, but it’s woody and mostly there for decoration, so most people just leave it on the board.
Crackers are a must, but a dip like our whipped feta dip rounds things out nicely for a bigger spread.
