What makes this one special for entertaining is that it does double duty. It’s gorgeous enough to be the thing people photograph for their stories, but it’s also just simple, familiar caprese flavors that even picky guests will eat. No weird ingredients, no last minute stress, just a smart arrangement of things you already know people love.

If you want to keep the caprese theme going, my Christmas wreath salad uses a lot of the same ingredients. For warm appetizers to serve alongside it, try the cranberry brie pull apart bread or Christmas tree pull apart bread, and pour a round of cranberry mimosas. You’ll find more ideas in my list of Christmas party food ideas.

Ingredients for Caprese Candy Cane appetizer: mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, salt, pepper, olive oil, and balsamic glaze.

What You Need for This Mozzarella Tomato Christmas Appetizer

Fresh Mozzarella: Go for the balls packed in water, they slice cleanly and stay soft without getting rubbery.

Roma Tomatoes: These are close to the same width as the mozzarella slices, which is exactly what keeps your red and white stripes lined up.

Fresh Basil Leaves: Tuck in whole leaves rather than torn ones so the platter keeps its color and looks fresh all night.

Olive Oil: A good finishing oil does a lot of work here since there’s no cooking involved, so use one you actually like the taste of.

Balsamic Glaze: The thick, syrupy kind clings to the slices instead of pooling and making a mess on the platter.

Prepared Pesto (optional): A store bought jar works fine, just give it a stir since the oil separates while it sits.

Salt and Black Pepper: Hold off seasoning until right before serving so the tomatoes don’t weep.

Crostini or Sliced Baguette: Toast these ahead of time so they’re ready to scoop the second the platter hits the table.

How to Build This Easy Christmas Caprese Appetizer

Step 1: Lay your tomato slices across a few paper towels and press gently to blot the extra moisture. This one step keeps the whole platter from turning watery once it sits out.

Step 2: Pick a large platter and start laying down tomato and mozzarella slices in a line, overlapping each one slightly like roof shingles. Keep this first stretch straight, that’s going to be the stem of your candy cane.

Step 3: Curve the last several slices into a hook shape at the top so the whole thing reads as a candy cane. Don’t overthink the curve, slightly imperfect actually looks more natural once it’s dressed.

Step 4: Tuck basil leaves in the gaps between slices and around the edges of the shape. This is what turns it from stripes into something that actually looks festive.

Step 5: Right before you’re ready to serve, drizzle the whole platter with olive oil, then balsamic glaze, then pesto if you’re using it. Finish with a light sprinkle of salt and pepper.

Step 6: Set out your crostini or baguette slices alongside the platter and let people build their own bites.

Tips for Making This Caprese Candy Cane Ahead of Time

  • Build It Early: Arrange the whole candy cane up to 2 hours before your party, cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and keep it in the fridge until guests arrive.
  • Dress It Last: Hold off on the oil, glaze, pesto, and salt until right before serving, since salt pulls moisture out of the tomatoes and can make the platter watery.
  • Keep Basil Fresh: Add basil leaves close to serving time too, they wilt and darken if they sit dressed for too long.
  • Leftovers: This one’s really best fresh, but you can refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for a day and chop everything into a quick caprese salad.

Easy Swaps for This Holiday Caprese Platter

Shape Variation: If the candy cane shape feels fussy, arrange the same slices in a circle instead for a caprese wreath that works for any winter party.

  • It pairs really nicely if you’re also serving a Christmas wreath salad on the same table.

Tomato Swap: Cherry or grape tomatoes sliced in half work in a pinch if Roma tomatoes aren’t available.

  • The stripes won’t line up quite as neatly, but the flavor is just as good.

Cheese Options: Burrata torn into pieces makes this extra creamy if you want to upgrade it for a smaller, fancier gathering.

  • Bocconcini balls work great too and are easier to portion if guests are serving themselves.

Pesto Free Version: Skip the pesto entirely if you want a cleaner, more classic caprese flavor.

  • A few extra basil leaves make up for the flavor you lose.

Serving Swap: Serve with pita chips or a sliced sourdough instead of crostini if that’s what you have on hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes, arrange the mozzarella, tomato, and basil up to 2 hours ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. Just wait to add the oil, glaze, pesto, and seasoning until right before your guests arrive.

Why does it matter if I use Roma tomatoes?

Roma tomatoes are close in width to the mozzarella slices, so your stripes line up neatly and the candy cane shape actually reads clearly on the platter.

Can I turn this into a different shape?

Definitely. Arrange the same ingredients in a circle instead and you’ve got a caprese wreath, which works great alongside other holiday appetizers.

What if I don’t have balsamic glaze?

You can simmer regular balsamic vinegar in a small saucepan until it thickens into a syrup, or just skip it and lean a little heavier on the olive oil and pesto.

Is this good for a party besides Christmas?

Absolutely, skip the candy cane shape and arrange it as a simple layered platter for any party where you’d normally serve caprese salad.
