Ingredients Needed

  • Rice Krispies cereal – or a comparable store brand.
  • Butter – we used unsalted butter.
  • Miniature marshmallows
  • Red food coloring – liquid or gel food coloring can be used.

How to Make Halloween Rice Krispie Brains

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a large pot, melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted and smooth.

Mix in a few drops of red food coloring until you reach a pink “brain-like” shade.

Stir completely until you have the desired color.

Stir in the Rice Krispies cereal until evenly coated with the marshmallow mixture.

Scoop portions of the mixture with an ice cream scoop and place onto the prepared tray. Shape into ovals with your hands.

Then use the wide end of a butter knife to press a line down the center to create the look of brain halves.

Mix a little red food coloring with water in a small bowl. Use a clean paintbrush to add “veins” on the top of each brain for a creepy finishing touch.

Allow the brains to firm up at room temperature before serving. Arrange on a platter for the full spooky effect.

Helpful Tips

  • Grease your hands – Lightly coat your hands with butter or cooking spray to keep the mixture from sticking while shaping.
  • Color depth – Add more food coloring for a darker red brain or use less for a lighter pink shade.
  • Even portions – An ice cream scoop makes each brain the same size.
  • Shortcut – Skip the painted veins if you’re short on time, they’ll still look fun with just the pink color.
  • Make ahead – These can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container.

Substitutions and Variations

Cereal swap – Use Cocoa Krispies for darker “zombie” brains.

Flavor twist – Stir in a little strawberry or raspberry extract for fruity flavor.

Decoration change – Instead of painting veins, drizzle with red candy melts for an extra gooey look.

Mini version – Make smaller bite-sized brains for party trays or classroom snacks.

Spooky platter – Serve on a tray with gummy worms or candy eyeballs for added creep factor.

How to Store

Keep leftover Rice Krispie brains in an airtight container on the countertop for up to 5 days.

Common FAQs

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes, they can be made the day before your party. Just keep them covered so they don’t dry out.

Can I freeze them?

Freezing isn’t recommended, as the marshmallow mixture can get hard when thawed.

Can I use different types of Oreos?

Absolutely! Any Oreo variety works. Try Golden Oreos or seasonal flavors for a fun twist.

Halloween Rice Krispie brains are sure to be a hit at your party! A little spooky, but a whole lot of tasty.
